Results for you Favorite Movie Star Ever

First of all I want to thank everyone who voted in any or all of the rounds here. The winners as chosen by the group would not have been my selections, but when asked to name a "favorite" there are no right or wrong answers. It all comes down to personal taste.

On the Actors side I think my personal favorites would have come down to Harrison Ford and Clint Eastwood. I know there are many better actors than both of them. Cary Grant, Henry Fonda, The Duke, Pacino, DeNiro are but a few of the many actors who have made many films I have enjoyed greatly.

For the females my choice would have been Katherine Hepburn. Her range of films and the length of her career are unmatched. From screwball comedies such as Bringing Up Baby to The Lion In Winter she did it all as well as any female that has ever appeared on the Silver Screen.

Now here are the results of the voters:

Finals:
1)Tom Hanks 16 vs. 2)Harrison Ford  11

1)Jodie Foster 16 vs. 14)Meryl Streep 11

I should be posting a new topic in a few days and any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks again. I wonder what topic I will pick next.

Quarterfinals for you Favorite Movie Stars Ever

Well it is time to begin the voting for round 3. We had a few upsets again, and the match ups look even tougher this round. Not all of the voting went the way I hoped or expected. We did have less voting in this round and as close as some the battles were I wonder how different the results might have been with the same turnout as last week.

As always first here are the results from round 2 with my comments that I hope you find at least a little bit amusing and or entertaining.

1)Tom Hanks 23 vs. 17)Cary Grant  8 Forrest Gump defeats Mr. Lucky. This would have been a very tough match up for me to vote on as I really enjoy both their work. Grant was great in such a wide range of roles from Hitchcokc thrillers to screwball comedies.
2)Harrison Ford 24 vs. 18)Dustin Hoffman 7 Dr. Jones, Hans Solo and Jack Ryan way too much for the Rain Man and Tootsie
3)Denzel Washington  21  vs. 19)Gene Hackman 10 Just like in Crimson Tide Denzel comes out on top in this match up.
4)Paul Newman 17 vs. 13)Mel Gibson 14  William Wallace's cries of Freedom go for naught against Cool Hand Luke and Butch Cassidy
5)Al Pacino  18 vs. 12)Jimmy Stewart 13 Oscar winner for playing a Colonel beats real life General in a battle of 2 true superstars
6)Robert DeNiro  23 vs. 11)Robert Redford 8  Crazed Taxi Driver takes the Sundance Kid for a long ride
7)Jack Nicholson  19 vs. 10)Sean Connery 12 Jack might be the only man as cool as 007 as Bond goes down.
8)Clint Eastwood  14  vs. 9)Morgan Freeman 17 I guess it takes God to take down Clint as he did too good a job directing his good buddy.

Actresses:
1)Jodie Foster 25 vs. 16)Demi Moore 6  Clarice defeats G.I. Jane easily
2)Julia Roberts 23 vs. 15)Rita Hayworth 8 Erin Brockovich defeats Shawshank poster girl
3)Sophia Loren 13 vs. 14)Meryl Streep 18 Incredible actress beats legendary Italian beauty
4)Sandra Bullock 15 vs. 13)Marilyn Monroe 14  Speed kills this legendary beauty instead of a overdose this time.

2)Harrison Ford  vs. 7)Jack Nicholson
3)Denzel Washington vs. 6)Robert DeNiro
4)Paul Newman  vs. 5)Al Pacino

Vote For Your Favorite Movie Stars Ever Round 1

Well first I want to thank everyone who nominated actors and actresses to be included in these brackets.

Enough of them received multiple votes for me to include 64 in each bracket. 128 Actors and Actresses were mentioned. I had to make the choice for the last few entrants into the bracket from among those who each received two votes.  I was very surprised by how few votes some got compared to others. The seeding is based on the number of initial mentions everyone got. When multiples had the same number of mentions I did make the decisions on where to rank them among each other. This was done based on a variety of factors including the length of their careers. I will also be commenting on those who didn't make it that I thought were deserving.

I will not be voting unless there are ties. Please remember that the choices made are those of the group and not mine, well at least in most cases. I plan on my voicing my thoughts of each result, so please just don't blame me if you don't like those that advance.

I also want to ask everyone who participates to please rate the other posts here . I am sure everyone will rate your postings also. I give everyone who is nice enough to support my efforts a 5 and usually add you to my favorites also. If I don't do that it is purely by mistake.

Please excuse any misspelled names.

I must say I think the group did a much better job with picking the men than the women. Many of the females chosen really are television stars or personalities. I hope the first round of voting will clear out those that I consider "pretenders"

The voting for this round will end on Sunday Aug. 24 at 11PM est. I will be posting round 2 as soon as possible afterwards.

Who's Your Favorite Movie Star?

Well I received several good suggestions for the topic of this blog and I very well could use them in the near future. I thought after doing my last one about television that I would switch to movies, well at least actors.

Everybody has a few actors or actresses that are their favorites over the years, some dramatic others comedic. So it is time to start another bracket competition.

Please submit a list of up to 15 of your favorite actors and 15 actresses ever. I hope to be able to have a bracket of at least 32 in each category depending on how the nominations go.

The seeding will of course be based on the number of mentions each person gets from the group.

How will the stars of years ago do versus those of a more recent vintage? How much support will Gable, Fonda, Stewart, Cagney, Bogart and others get compared Will Smith?

I will post my lists of 15 soon. Once again I will not be voting once the competition begins unless there are ties. As before the bracket will be set up as in the NCAA Basketball Tourney, which means no reseeding.

I hope this one is half as popular as my last one. I will keep the nominations open until August 15 at 11PM est.

Please be so kind to rate your fellow posters as I am sure they will do the same for you.

Here are the Results for the Best in Television

Well after 6 weeks of eliminations the voters here have made their choices on which shows were the best in the history of television. While I didn't agree with all the choices made here over the past rounds I was happy to tally the votes and report on the choices made. As I have said before doing this bought back a lot memories. Some of them of the shows, the actors, scenes and dialog but also of family sitting around the set.

I want to thank all of you for your participation along with many great comments made about the shows that were being voted on. Of course I want to add my thanks for all the compliments you nice people gave me when you cast your votes. They were greatly appreciated. With that said I guess it is time to tell all you good folk what choices you made. Once again not all voted in every category.

(1)Gunsmoke 23 vs. (2)Bonanza  22  This final to me was a lock to occur from the day I posted the bracket for westerns. As you can see this was a very close race until the end. Both were predictable in their own ways. You knew Matt Dillon was always going to get the bad guy and that whichever Cartwright brother fell in love was never going to get the girl. If it was true love you knew she was going to die. Gunsmoke would have gotten my vote here, though Deadwood in its 3 seasons on HBO was incredible.

(7)C.S. I. 15 vs. (21)The Twilight Zone  38  This was a runaway  from the start. Serling's masterpiece pulled one upset after another. One of the most original shows in the history of television versus a show that was basically an updated copy of Quincy. As I stated previously neither of these shows would have been my choice to win this, but in this match up I would have gone with The Twilight Zone. My choice for the final would have been Hill Street Blues against The Wire

(1)Seinfeld 26  vs. (3)M*A*S*H  27 This was a tight battle the whole way. If I had not asked for final votes this morning the results would have been reversed.  One of these shows was original, the other a copy of a movie. One was strictly a comedy that never took itself seriously, it even made fun of itself. The other very serious at times seeming to forget it was supposed to be a comedy. One's sole purpose was to make you laugh while the other show seemed to want to preach to you especially in the later years of the show. How many lines or sayings do you remember from M*A*S*H* compared to Seinfeld? As you can tell by my comments Seinfeld would have been my choice here.

During the nomination process I also asked for your favorite specific memories from all the television viewing you have done in your life. There were many sporting events chosen but all of them but one were of your favorite teams winning a title. So that meant no Red Sox fan mentioning Bucky Dent, a Bills fan talking about Norwood and wide right etc. The only  sports memory that crossed that line was the Miracle On Ice of the 1980 USA  Olympic Hockey team.  These are the moments in history as documented on television that received the most mentions. These choices of course depended a lot on the age of the responders.

Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster
9/11 Coverage
Armstrong walks on the moon
Berlin Wall Falls
Hurricane Katrina
Bernard Shaw--Night One of the Gulf War
J F K  Funeral

I will have new topic up in a few days and appreciate any more suggestions.
A few have been submitted to me that I am thinking about. They are Cartoon  Characters, Stand-Up Comics and Television Characters.

It was also suggested that the people choose the best show from the 3 Winners. If you would like to submit your choice from among these 3 shows I will gladly tally the votes.

Thanks once again to all of you for the interest you showed this series of blogs, even if I disagree with your choices.

We have reached the finals for TV's best ever.

Well we have now reached the finals. I have really enjoyed doing this blog and am sad to say that this is the last round. Please feel free to share a favorite memory of the shows you choose and or reasons why the shows got your vote.

The results of the last round are listed first with the vote totals and the winning show in bold type. Once again not all the match ups have the same amount of total votes. Some voters have left out a match up or even not voted at all for certain genres.

Please feel free to vote even if you have not yet done so. Remember to tell your friends to vote also. As always I will only vote in case of a tie in any match up. I will also do my best to keep my choice a secret if I do need to vote. I did not vote in the last round and I am glad I didn't have to in many of these match ups.

Remember that these shows were not of my choosing but were selected by all of your fellow posters. My choices would have differed on many of the shows in every round. Without me going back and checking I believe I only had one the 4 dramas that made the semi finals on my initial list of 10 shows, though I do think I had all of the Westerns and Comedies on my list of 10.

Semi-Finals:
Western Bracket:
.
(1)Gunsmoke 24 vs. (4)Rawhide 7 No surprise here that Clint and his fellow cowhands not able to defeat Marshall Dillon, Ms. Kitty, Festus and the rest of the townsfolk. This show wasn't the longest running prime time entertainment show for no reason.

(2)Bonanza 25 vs. (3)The Rifleman 5  Ben and his boys win big against Lucas  and his boy Mark. This was surely not a surprise setting up an expected showdown between by far the 2 biggest Westerns in the history of Television. This was the first show I ever saw in color.

Drama Bracket:

(1)Hill Street Blues 11 vs. (21)The Twilight Zone 26 Serling's masterpiece continues its incredible run of upsets. I am surprised by both the outcome and margin of victory. Without Hill Street I am not sure what drama on television would look like today. It was the first show that I remember as an adult that I could not wait to see the next episode of.

(7)C.S.I. 23 vs. (3)Hawaii Five-O   14  That either of these shows made it this far really was shocking to me.I would not have considered either of them in my top 20 ever despite having watched both of them, but you the voters have spoken. The lab geeks join Twilight Zone in the finals of what I am dubbing the upset bracket.

Comedy Bracket:

(1)Seinfeld 21 vs. (4)All In The Family  19  This match up's leader changed just about every time I tallied the votes. I doubt that either of these shows success will be matched again. Both of them came so close to being canceled very early in their run and in today's market would not have lasted 6 weeks. Either of the shows would have been a worthy winner of the whole tourney. Classic lines and characters versus a show that showed sitcoms could tackle the serious issues of the day.

(2)Cheers 16 vs. (3)M*A*S*H  24  The show that produced the most watched episode in history vs. a show that created the character(Frasier) with as long a life as anyone ever in television entertainment. Both shows had cast  changes and carried on. As in the previous match up one show obviously was much more serious at times than the other.

The Finals:
Westerns:
(1)Gunsmoke  vs. (2)Bonanza  This is the match up I expected to see when this bracket was formed. The 2 longest running and most iconic of all westerns battle it out.

Dramas:
(7)C.S. I.  vs. (21)The Twilight Zone  This bracket has surprised me with this pairing. I knew the show I thought was the best in history would not make it to the finals but I did like the chances of the show I thought would win but it ran into the upset king in the semis to make to here. So here we have a show that has spawned 2 spin offs versus a show that inspired a Movie, a remake and more than a few copycat shows.

Comedies:
(1)Seinfeld  vs. (3)M*A*S*H  Well here we have the show that was proud about nothing against one that tried to have a serious vein to go along with its comedic roots. To me the best way to compare and contrast the shows is how they dealt with death. Think of when Henry Blake died and how sad and serious M*A*S*H* was and then how Jerry and the gang reacted to the  death of George's fiance Susan.

I want to thank all of the participants for making this blog, so much fun for me to do despite all the work involved and apparently somewhat of a success as the blogs here go. So be sure to give yourselves a round of applause. It has bought back lots of fond memories of many specific lines, scenes and characters for me and I hope it has done the same for all of you.

The big question is what do I try next. Any suggestions?

Please remember to rate your fellow posters contributions as I am sure they will do the same for you.

I will be keeping this round up for a little longer than a week and will be posting the final results July 31 by noon est.

Semi-Finals for the best in Television History

Well we have now reached the semi-finals and the match ups even tougher than before. The results of the last round are listed first with the vote totals and the winning show in bold type. I will also do my best to keep my choice a secret if I do need to vote. I did not vote in the last round and I am glad I didn't have to in many of these match ups.

Western Bracket:
(1) Gunsmoke 38 vs. (8) The Big Valley 5 Marshall Dillon wins in another rout. At least this time the opponent got some votes. Bet most of them were for Linda Evans.
(2) Bonanza  31 vs. (10) Maverick 12 Hop Sing and the Cartwrights cook James Garner's traveling gambler's goose.
(3) The Rifleman 31 vs. (6) Deadwood  13 Pa and his quick shooting with his rifle blast the folks from Deadwood. If more folks had HBO I think this result would have been different or at least a lot closer.
(4) Rawhide 24 vs. (12) The Wild Wild West 20 Even the Old West's version of 007 and his own Q, in Artemis, was not cool enough to beat Clint and his fellow cowhands.

Drama Bracket:
(1)Hill Street Blues 27 vs.(8)Rockford Files 22 James Garner had a nice run in 2 brackets but Frank Furillo and his cops lock down Rockford, Rocky and Angel.
(2)NYPD Blue 19 vs. (7)C.S.I. 29 We have seen the last of Sipowicz's bare butt as Las Vegas lab geeks pull off an upset. Grissom and friends use science to lead their way to victory.
(3)Hawaii Five 26 vs. (27)Magnum PI 21 Thomas Magnum in the Ferrari can't out run McGarrett and his cops in the battle of Hawaii. I must say although I watched both these shows I was surprised that either of them made it this far.
(4)The Sopranos 19 vs. (21)The Twilight Zone 30 Jersey mob whacked by Serling's masterpiece as it wins in another upset. Think of all the stars who appeared before they were known.

Comedy Bracket:
(1)Seinfeld 31 vs. (9)Taxi 22 Taxi runs out of gas against the show about nothing. This would have been a good final match up to me.
(2)Cheers  36 vs. (7)Andy Griffith 17 Barney needed more than one bullet to defeat this show. Andy and the rest of Mayberry surprised me going this far. Only Otis is not upset that Cheers prevails.
(3)M*A*S*H  36 vs. (6)Simpsons 17 D'oh Homer and the most dysfunctional town go down to defeat. Two other shows that would have been worthy finalists, though I thought Alda's Hawkeye got way too preachy for me.
(4)All In The Family 37 vs. (5)Married with Children 16 Archie and The Dingbat's family were too much for Al, Peggy and the kids. Well The Bundys always considered themselves losers and they were right in this round. I'll miss Kelly though.

Semi-Finals:
Western Bracket:
Well all 4 favorites have made it to the semis and I would not be surprised to see that trend continue in this bracket.

(1)Gunsmoke vs. (4)Rawhide Can Clint upset the longest running Western ever?

(2)Bonanza vs. (3)The Rifleman How will Lucas McCain do against the West's most popular family?

Drama Bracket:
The only bracket in which we had lower seeds make it this far. Can either one of them make it to the finals. It is up to you.

(1)Hill Street Blues vs. (21)The Twilight Zone  Can Serling's masterpiece pull off its 4th upset in a row?

(7)C.S.I. vs. (3)Hawaii Five-O    TV's worst haircut ever against the beautiful science geeks from Las Vegas.

Comedy Bracket:
4 of televisions biggest hits ever in a true battle of iconic heavyweights. I can see any of these 4 worthy shows winning it all.

(1)Seinfeld vs. (4)All In The Family  Manhattan yuppies against Queens working class. Can you picture Archie and Kramer smoking cigars together? Can you imagine Edith's face if she ever over heard some of Jerry and his friends conversations?

(2)Cheers vs. (3)M*A*S*H  I can picture most of the M*A*S*H* characters stopping into the bar for a drink except the only Bostonian. Who was more naive, Woody or Radar? Who was the bigger skirt chaser, Sam or Hawkeye? Was Diane or Hot Lips more uptight?

I want to thank all of the participants so far for making this blog, so much fun for me to do despite all the work involved. It has bought back  lots of fond memories of many specific lines, scenes and characters for me and I hope it has done the same for all of you too. Round 3 in the Best Shows in TV History

Here are the results from round 2 and the match ups for round 3. This week we have added the 3rd category for Westerns. If you thought the previous match ups provided some tough choices wait till you see these. Once again you will notice that not all the match ups have the same number of votes as selected voters left out some of them. I was surprised by the results of some of the match ups, especially by some of the margins both large and small. Some of what would my choices have been eliminated. We had, based on the seeding, 3 upsets on the drama side and 2 in the comedies. For those of who are curious I did need to cast a vote to break a tie but being sneaky like I am I also cast a vote to make another match up also only 1 vote apart. Now for the new match ups. I chose the 16th seed for Westerns among a few shows that each only received one vote. I really don't think it mattered which show I picked as I expect it to get trounced in the first round.

Vote in round 2 for the Best in Television

Well here are the match ups for round 2 of the voting for the best shows in the history of television. You need not have voted before to do so now. So tell your friends and let's see how many votes we can get.

I decided to post the number of votes received by each show in the first round on a separate page.
You will see that the total number of votes in a few match ups are not the same as a few voters did not cast a vote in every pairing. Here is the link if you are interested: http://www.sportsline.com/mcc/blogs

Comments on your choices are appreciated, but please try and just list the show you pick as the winner of each match up. This weeks poll closes on Sunday June 29 at 11 PM New York City time. Next week I will add the brackets for westerns to the blog. I am still accepting nominations for them, up to 10 shows can be named, as well as the 5 most memorable things you ever saw on TV. As usual I will only be casting a vote if one is needed to break a tie.

Please take the time to rate your fellow posters here, I am sure they will do the same for you. Of course I thank you all for your contributions, without them this blog would not be worth much.

About What's On My Mind
I have picked another topic that I can only hope is half as popular as the last. Everybody loves the movies. The Stars of a long time ago remain legends and forever young on film. These actors have created memorable characters. They made you laugh, cry, scream and feel every emotion possible. Of all those that ever appeared on the Silver Screen I want to learn who your favorites of All Time are. It will be interesting to see how the stars of yesteryear stack up to the new Kings and Queens of the movies.
